“I’m not sure if this is a social group with a running commitment” or a “running group with a social commitment” – either way the end result’s the same – its fun, fitness, new friends and motivation all together!

With training advice from the experienced coaches and different levels of runners, there’s a place for everyone here – the excellent facilities (showers and Bar) also help, as does the open dinner once a month … A great club, so come and join!

I have to say at the start, I wasn’t convinced, why do we need another club? As a beginner jogger (not runner) completely out of shape (round is a shape?), I was wary of the club mentality. But I found some new friends and like-minded souls among the “die-hard” fit advanced runners. There are people just like me, wanting to have fun and make a commitment to getting out there together and moving our butts! The camaraderie once you get through a couple of sessions is great. For all you potential beginner joggers out there in Basel, remember — if you do it, do it for you — you’re not competing with anyone else but yourself here. I’ve learned pacing and I am enjoying the jog now, whether in or out of the club. Also, the coaching and organization is the gravy on top (low-fat of course!) and helped keep me — and I think I can speak for some of the other beginners at least — pushing myself not to quit when I felt most like quitting. What’s more, the beginner’s coaches even offered helpful advice on stretching and taking care of injuries. One last plus if you get involved, you get to see some inspiring “die-hards” too!

Question from Basel Man on a local website.  25.09.09

I wonder why it costs money to run in Basel. What is the 35CHF fee for, and what do you get for it?

Perhaps because excellent changing and shower facilities in a superb location don’t come for free two nights a week?!
It’s also a friendly, well organised club with professional coaching (which I’m sure the fees don’t cover) and I don’t think you’ll get fit with many other sports clubs/lessons for cheaper (not to mention make so many new friends!).
I’ve been going along for a few weeks now and it’s well worth it.
